Lady Pirates pick up two region wins

The Lady Pirates had a very busy week last week as they took on two region opponents and celebrated their homecoming week. After an exhausting week of activities the girls in green took to the court to face a very formidable opponent in the Monument Valley Cougars. The Cougars had a very good record and had only lost one region game to Monticello.

The Pirates came out quick, moved the ball well and were ahead at the end of 1, 23-13. The Pirates outscored the Cougars by two in the second quarter to lead 37-25 at half. Green River poured on the scoring in the third period and led by 25 at the end of the quarter. Both teams had a higher than normal turnover count in this game, but the Pirates did many things right in this game to take home a solid win.

In the fourth quarter the Lady Pirates were plagued with foul trouble. All four starters had at least three fouls and Green River had to let up on the defensive pressure. The Cougars came back but it was too late and Green River picked up an easier than anticipated win, 66-55.

Michaela Hughes led all scorers with 28 points on 13 for 19 shooting. She picked up another double, double also as she pulled down 11 boards. Jamie Johnson was six for nine from the field with 13 points and for her double, double grabbed 10 rebounds. Megan Hatt came away with a triple double as she scored 11 points, had 11 assists, nabbed 10 rebounds and had four steals. Feleisha Antillion dropped in five points while Sydney Thayn and Taylor Johnson each had four.

For the second game of the week, the Pirates hosted the Navajo Mountain Jaguars. The game was never in jeopardy of being lost and Green River cruised to an easy 53-29 victory. Hughes came up with another double, double, scoring 22 and nabbing 11 boards. Hatt hit two threes on her way to 12 points and had eight rebounds, while J. Johnson ended with 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Antillion had six points, with one three and worked hard, earning five boards and four steals. Thayn had two points and T. Johnson had one in the win.

Green River is in a great position as the only undefeated team in region play at 4-0. With an enviable season record of 12-3, the look forward to more region play, hosting Pinnacle on Jan. 25. Then traveling to Whitehorse on Jan. 27 to play the Raiders.
