The Lady Pirates continued region play last week, taking on the Pinnacle Panthers and the Whitehorse Raiders. On Jan. 24 Green River hosted Pinnacle. The Pirates started off slow, getting down 7-0 before kicking it in and soon ran away with the contest 64-37. All eight varsity players were able to get in the scoring column. Michaela Hughes and Jamie Johnson each came up with a double, double. Hughes had 20 points and 14 boards, while Johnson scored 15 and pulled down 11 boards and five assists. Megan Hatt hit four threes on her way to 14 points, seven boards and six assists. Feleisha Antillion made a three and nabbed four rebounds and four assists. Sydney Thayn had five points. Kira Engleman pulled down seven boards and scored four points. Hannah Manalilli hit one bucket for two and Taylor Johnson made a free throw and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Pirates were then off to Montezuma Creek to defend their unbeaten region record against the Whitehorse Raiders. Whitehorse had only lost one region contest thus far and the Pirates knew they had a tough game ahead. At the opening tip off, Johnson controlled, tipped it to Hatt who quickly dribbled to the basket and hit a streaking Hughes and the girls in Green were up 2-0 within three seconds. That would be the last time the Pirates would lead in the contest.

Green River was down 18-15 after the first quarter. The Pirates had a tough shooting night as there were many shots that seemed to be in, only to pop out again. The girls battled hard, but ended up losing the game 56-41. This puts Green River and Whitehorse in a tie for first place in region. The Pirates have four more region games. Coach Parsons and Coach Brady are working on strategies to get the girls back in the winning column next week. Coach Parsons commented, "This is just a little bump in the road." Coach Parsons is confident the girls will rise to the occasion and continue their winning ways. Hatt was the leading scorer for the Pirates in the contest with three threes and 17 points, five assists. Hughes scored 16 points and battled for nine boards. Johnson scored six and got eight rebounds and Antillion scored two. Green River will next take the long road trip to Monument Valley and Navajo Mountain on Feb. 3-4. On Feb. 7 the girls will play in Monticello and will be home on Feb. 9 against Whitehorse.
