Legal Notice and Request for Comments for the Environmental Potters
Canyon Veratrum Harvest
Emery County Progress

The Ferron/Price Ranger District of the Manti-La Sal National Forest
will be preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) to assess the
mechanical harvest of up to 60 acres of Veratrum californicum in
Potters Canyon over a five year period.

Infinity Pharmaceuticals, Inc is a company who is currently engaged
in trial research studies of a developing drug candidate that
demonstrates efficacy in preclinical models of several different
cancers. These drug candidates are derived from the substance
Cyclopamine, found in Veratrum californicum commonly referred to as
corn lily. Research has shown that the concentration of this drug is
highest in plants found on the Wasatch Plateau. To support the
research phase of the development of this potential drug, Infinity has
put in an application to collect Veratrum californicum from the
Manti-La Sal National Forest to further their research program.

This scoping letter represents an early stage in the analysis process
of the forth coming Environmental Assessment. This 30-day Notice and
Comment opportunity is required at 36 CFR 215.3. The opportunity to
comment on the Proposed Action ends 30 days following the date of
publication of the Legal Notice of Proposed Action in the Emery County
Progress. After receiving your comments, we will identify and analyze
the issues raised, finalize a Proposed Action, and if necessary,
develop alternatives to the Proposed Action.

This decision will be subject to appeal pursuant to Forest Service
regulations 36 CFR 215. Only those who submit timely comments during
this comment period will be accepted as potential appellants.
Comments can be either oral or written in response to this project.
Each individual or representative from each organization submitting

record for this project and will be available for public inspection.
Comments should include the information required pursuant to 36 CFR
215.6(a)(3), as published in the Federal Register on June 4, 2003.
