Although last week was not a good week for Emery High basketball, much is being learned about the two teams representing Emery High, parents and fans. These two teams are competitive and pretty talented and with some luck, they will both still be playing on the last day of state tournament play this season.

The Emery boys finally came home and played just a single game last week, a game against valley rival Carbon. In a hard-fought contest, Carbon came out on top in the end 58-53.

Emery, led by junior point guard Bailey Faimalo with 20 points and numerous assists and steals, took the early lead in the game but the Spartans could not hold off the Dinos in the second half. Emery won the first half 28-25 while Carbon won the second half 35-25.

Emery was incapable of stopping Carbon's Derek Young throughout the game, as he really was a force in the middle. Young finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and a lot of intimidation in the middle.

Dakota Cisneros and Jordan Blanc each finished the game with 14 points for the Dinos as their quickness came into play time and time again. Also scoring for Carbon was Wyatt Hansen with 4 points, Bryce Blackburn with 2 points and Michael Pezcuh with 1 point.

Dawson Jensen was Emery's only other player in double figures as he finished with 15 points. Jensen also had a good inside game as he came down with close to double digit rebounds and Jensen moved well throughout the game without the ball and was hit with good passes by his teammates.

Curtis Mason and Dillon Wilstead each scored 7 points in the game and Spencer Labrum added 3 points and Gavin McDermott scored 1 point.

Neither team shot free throws well as Emery was 11 for 19 and Carbon was 12 for 19.

The Emery Lady Spartans went on the road twice last week and came home each time with a loss. On Tuesday, Emery traveled to Beaver and lost 52-49 in overtime to the defending 2-A state championship team who lost just one player from last season's team. On Thursday, Emery traveled to Parowan and lost 54-44.

Against Parowan, Emery got out of the gate slowly as they trailed 15-6 after the first quarter and then never really recovered. Emery only outscored Parowan in one quarter, the third 11-7,

Sophomore Ashlynn Allred led the team with 19 points and Allred also unofficially had 10 steals in the game. Senior Jeridi Price was the only other Spartan in double figures with 11 points. Shelby Allred scored 7 points, Bailey Rasmussen scored 4 points and Kelsie Cox scored 3 points.

At Beaver, Emery took the early lead of 15-5 in the first quarter only to let Beaver come right back in the second quarter to narrow the gap to 24-22 at the half. Beaver grabbed the lead in the third quarter as Emery was unable to find the basket and had trouble against the Beaver defense. Emery was outscored 12-4 in the period.

Emery won the final period to force a tie and send the game into overtime. Ashlynn Allred closed out regulation for Emery by scoring seven points in the final minute of the game to force overtime. Allred had a steal for a lay-up, a three-point shot and then hit two free throws to tie the score.

Ashlynn finished with 17 points, 6 steals and 3 assists with all three leading the team. Jeridi Price and Kelsie Cox each finished with 10 points while Bailey Rasmussen scored 7 points and Hannah Dyer scored 5 points. Bailey had 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots to lead the team in those categories.

The Lady Spartans are on the road for three games this week. Emery will play at Carbon on Tuesday night, at Millard on Thursday night and at Delta on Friday night. The boy's team will play at Beaver on Wednesday night and then will be home on Friday night to play Union.
