The 2013-14 winter high school sports season has finally arrived and the two county high schools are looking to improve on last season's performances.

The Emery High girls' basketball team finished second at last season's 2-A state tournament after a loss to Richfield and the team feels that they can win it all this season.

With two returning seniors and a strong junior class, Emery should be a favorite to win the 2-A state title this season.

The girls play Piute this Tuesday afternoon at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield to open the season.

The Emery boys' team opens the season with a home game this Tuesday evening against Enterprise.

The Emery boys finished fourth last season in 2-A ball and this season the team believes they are good enough to challenge for the title.

The two Green River teams both made the 1-A basketball playoffs last season but each lost their first two games and were eliminated.

Both teams would like to go further into the playoffs this season and are practicing hard to do so.

The Pirate boy's team opens the season at Tabiona this Tuesday while the Lady Pirates will be playing at Grand High in Moab.

The girls actually opened the season last weekend with two games in Richfield.

They played Bryce Valley on Friday night and Wayne on Saturday.

The Emery High wrestling team will be at Beaver this Wednesday night to open the season.

Junior high wrestling will conclude with a tournament on Dec. 6 at San Rafael.
