Pirate basketball wins against Escalante/Tintic

The Green River Pirates are preparing for the homecoming game this Friday night as the two basketball teams will be hosting Intermountain Christian. The Pirates boys' team returned from the Holiday break and defeated Tintic High 65-40 while the Lady Pirates played Duchesne and lost the close game in the final period. Final score was 37-31.

Corbin Mecham scored 23 points to help the Pirates defeat the visiting team. TJ Hughes scored 13 points and Nick Corrigan scored 10 points as three Pirates finished the game in double figures. Jon Mendez was right behind with 9 points and Spencer Marshall scored 7 points and Chance Pfander scored 4 points.

Green River led 18-10 after the first period, 43-21 at the half and 54-35 after the third quarter as the Miners never really threatened to defeat the Pirates. Mendez pulled down 9 rebounds to lead the team in this category with Marshall adding 6 rebounds. Corrigan led the team with 6 assists. Marshall and Hughes each had 5 steals in the game and Mendez had 4.

In the loss to Duchesne, Duchesne led 13-10 after the first quarter and the score was tied at 17-17 at the half. Duchesne was up by one point after three periods and then the Eagles won the final period 14-9 to secure the win.

Kira Engleman was the only Lady Pirate to score in double figures as she put 10 points through the hoop. Engleman added 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 6 steals as she played a complete game for the Pirates.

Savannah Williams scored 6 points, Presley Lovato and Taylor Johnson each scored 5 points, Cassidy Bastian scored 4 points and Sydney Thayn scored a single point. Johnson led the team by grabbing 8 rebounds.

The two teams will be ready for the games this Friday and the school invites all alumni and city residents to come out and support the teams. Girls varsity game begins around 6 p.m. with the boy's game following right after at approximately 7:30 pm.
