Spartans add two wins; 10-2 to start region play
The Emery Spartans took their season record to 10-2 last week with a pair of victories. Emery defeated Carbon High for the second time in the past three games on Wednesday night by the score of 67-45 and then the Spartans started the 2014 region 15 season with a road win against San Juan by the score of 86-68.
This season's Spartan team is very fun to watch as they push the ball up the floor all night long and often leave teams shaking their heads in frustration. It seems like after every defensive rebound and after every defensive turnover that this team is pushing the ball quickly into the front court and more often than not the result is an easy score. It seems as though most players on the team will get out and run with the Emery fans enjoying it and the opponent's fans wondering just what happened.
Throughout the season, guards Dillon Wilstead and Bailey Faimalo have taken turns leading the team in scoring. Wilstead is the fourth leading scorer in the 2-A ranks and Faimalo is right behind in the seventh spot. Dillon has an 18.5 scoring average while Bailey has a 17.1 average. Last week was Faimalo's turn. Bailey scored 19 points against Carbon and then had his best game of the season against San Juan as he scored 31 points.
Against the Broncos, Bailey also had 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 11 assists as he played a very good game. Against Carbon he had 4 steals and 8 assists.
Wilstead was right behind though as he scored 16 points against San Juan and 15 points against Carbon. Against San Juan he had 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists as he and Faimalo complement each other very well.
Carbon played a good first quarter as they led the Spartans 14-13 at the end of the period but Emery went out in the second period and won the period 19-5 and then never looked back on their way to the comfortable win.
Against San Juan, Emery won the first quarter 15-6 and then the two teams battled evenly through the second quarter as each team scored 25 points. Emery led at the half 40-31. Emery then doubled up the Broncos in the third quarter to grab the win. Emery outscored San Juan 31-15 in the period and led 71-46 after three.
Also scoring for Emery in the Carbon game were Gavin McDermott with 13 points, McKlane Allred with 7 points, Tai Justice with 5 points, Beau Roundy and Kolton Butler with three points each, and Drexler Tanner with 2 points. Tanner led the team with 9 rebounds and Gavin added 7 rebounds.
Against San Juan, Tanner and McDermott each scored 10 points, Allred scored 7 points, Justice scored 6 points, with Jackson Jensen and Roundy each scoring three points. McDermott pulled down 13 rebounds in this game and Tanner added 9. Gavin and Drexler are fifth and sixth in the 2-A ranks in rebounding with neither player usually in foul trouble. Emery will be at home Wednesday night against North Sevier and on the road Friday night at South Sevier.
