Emery baseball wins 3 in Montrose tourney

The Emery High baseball team made their annual visit to Montrose, Colo. last Friday and Saturday and came home with wins in each of the three games they played. Emery defeated Fort Collins in a Friday game 9-7 and defeated Alamosa 11-1 and Montrose 12-3 on Saturday. When you combine that with their 13-3 victory over South Sevier earlier in the week, Emery is now 6-0 for the season and the team is playing very much like the team to beat in 2-A baseball this season.

Against South Sevier, Emery fell behind 2-0 after the first inning only to win the region game going away. Emery had 13 hits in the game with Gavin McDermott leading the way with three singles and a homerun. Emery scored 2 runs in the second inning, four in the third inning, a single run in the fifth inning and seven runs in the sixth inning.

Drexler Tanner scored four times in the game after hitting a double and a single and walking once and was the beneficiary of a Ram error. Dillon Wilstead started on the mound for the Spartans and picked up the win.

Against Fort Collins, Emery scored four runs in the first inning as Ethan Tuttle, Tyson Roper, McDermott and Tanner all scored after getting on base. McDermott had a triple in the inning. Emery scored three more in the fourth inning. Wilstead got on base and Ridge Nielson followed with a double and Ethan Tuttle getting on base by way of an error. Marco Mota singled to score Tuttle to close out the scoring in the inning.

Emery scored twice more in the seventh inning to break a 7-7 tie and to grab the win. Mota was hit by a pitch with the next two batters getting out. Wilstead then hit a triple to score Mota and Wilstead scored on a Tanner Lake single. Ethan Tuttle got the win in relief of Brayden Burke.

Against Montrose, Emery 3-0 after one inning, 4-0 after two, 6-0 after three and then scored six runs in the final two innings after allowing Montrose to score a single run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Emery had 12 hits in the game with McDermott leading the way with a pair of doubles. Roper also hit a double in the game and Mark Debry had a triple in the sixth inning. Ridge Nielson picked up the win on the mound with relief help from Tuttle late in the game.

In the final game in Colorado, Alamosa scored the first run in the top of the first inning after a double and a triple off Emery starting pitcher Tyson Roper. After that inning though, Roper only gave up a single the rest of the way in getting the victory.

Emery scored once in the bottom of the second inning to tie the score. After the first two Emery batters got out, Burke walked and scored on a double by Mota. Emery then scored six times in the third inning to grab control of the game.

Roper got on base to lead things off followed by McDermott walking and Wilstead hitting a double. Drexler then walked and Burke got out. Mota walked and Lake singled, Nielson singled and then Tuttle and Roper got out to end the inning.

Emery would score once in the fourth inning as Wilstead would score after getting on base due to an error. The final three Emery runs came in the fifth inning as Nielson, Tuttle and Roper all scored after getting on base. McDermott hit a single and the last Emery run scored ending the game due to the 10-run rule.

Emery will play Grand this Tuesday at home followed by a game Thursday at Carbon and a game Friday at North Sevier.
