Both of Emery's track teams made a good showing at the state tournament at BYU last weekend. The boys placed four runners and the girls placed two.

Emery's Mindi Larsen finished third in the discus with a throw of 108 feet, just four inches behind first place. Discus was extremely competitive. Five throwers were within two feet of the winner. Larsen's third place finish gave Emery six team points.

Jennifer Nielson finished third in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. Her time of 47.67 was just .46 behind the winner. Her race was during the hardest rainstorm of the day and amazingly stopped just after the end of the race. She also garnered six points for the Lady Spartans.

The 12 points were enough to give Emery 15th place, just behind region foes Lehi and Carbon who had 18, and just ahead of North Sanpete with 8.

The boys were led by their field events. Jared Malone finished fourth in long jump with a final jump of 20 feet, 2-and-one-half inches. That was an improvement of eight inches over his preliminary jump. It gave Emery five points.

Jordan Jenkins finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 136 feet. He added three points for the Spartans.

Emery's 4X100 meter relay team finished fifth and secured four points. Louis Duke ran the 100 meters, the 400 meters, and in the relay team. Although he only got points in the relay, he finished ninth in the 100 meters and eleventh in the 400 meters.

Daniel Farr got one point for the Spartans with his eighth place finish in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. It was quite a feat for Farr. He began running the 300 only two weeks previous and his preliminary race was two seconds faster than his previous fastest time.

The 13 Emery points gave the boys 15th place.

The team finish wasn't as impressive as the individual performances. Nearly everyone who qualified for state placed.

The sports season for the high school is over and leaves us with a lot of memories and great performances.
