Darrin Winn fights for control of the ball against Wasatch as Dempsey Jeffs looks on.

Darrin Winn was the man in Emery's first round victory over Wasatch last Saturday night in Castle Dale. Emery won that game 57-48. Darrin had an incredible game in leading the Spartans to victory. He led the team in scoring with 30 points. He led the team in rebounding with 18 and he also contributed 4 blocks and 3 steals. What a night for the Emery senior as he dominated both ends of court.

Emery scored 15 points in the first quarter and Darrin had seven of those. Emery scored 17 points in the second quarter and Darrin had seven of those. Emery scored 12 points in the third quarter and Darrin had all of those.

Emery finished the third quarter up 44-29 and you would think a comfortable lead. Not. Point guard Dave Justice fouled out with one minute to go in that third period and Emery was no longer the same team.

Despite Coach Jeffs instructions to play it safe, Justice tried to block a shot and was called with his final foul. Wasatch employed a full court press to start the final period and caused numerous Emery turnovers. The Emery crowd became just a little bit nervous as Wasatch scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter. Winn was double and triple teamed in that final period as Wasatch tried to deprive Emery of their scorer. He did not touch the ball for just over 4:30 minutes and finished with only 4 points in the quarter.

Emery won the game at the free throw line in that final period. Josh Eden was 5 for 6, Winn was 4 for 6 and Dempsey Jeffs was 2 for 2. Vic Rosen had Emery's only basket in period.

Other Emery scorers in the game were Eden with 10 points, Rosen with 6 points, Justice with 5 points, Jeffs with 4 points and Kyler Edgehouse with 2 points. Emery was 19 for 28 from 2-point range; Winn was 12 for 16. Emery was 0 for 6 from behind the 3-point line. Wasatch was 9 for 21 from 2-point range and 5 for 18 behind the line.

Emery will now face Dixie at Weber State. Dixie defeated Emery in December 51-46. Dixie is 18-4 while Emery is now 16-6. Game time is 9:30 a.m.

Earlier in the week Emery hosted Grand High School in an endowment game. Grand was 2-A's fourth ranked team. Emery won that close game 60-54. Winn scored 24 points in that game, pulled down 11 rebounds and had 5 blocked shots.

Justice had 12 points, 8 in the first quarter, along with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Jeffs had 9 points and Rosen had 7 points. Eden also had 7 points along with 5 steals and 4 assists. Edgehouse had a single point but also contributed 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
