to be a Rodeo Queen

Over the Hill Gang District 12 Senior Riding Club held their first Rodeo Queen tryouts on June 1. There were more than 20 girls in attendance. Each girl was judged on horsemanship and personality. A score card was used giving points for each required maneuver on the horsemanship pattern.

The girls then went to a personal interview with a judge where they were given points in each of the following categories: introduction, appearance, voice volume, poise, confidence, and question. The Junior Royalty rode inside a round pen where the acting judge was Layne Justice of Ferron. All Junior Royalty were awarded a sash, a leather pouch full of candy, bubbles, a necklace and ring. Judges were from the Payson area. As well as being former royalty themselves they have judged numerous 4-H and rodeo events including Fiesta Days.

The judges took time to talk and answer questions from the girls. They were quite impressed with how well the local girls conducted themselves and encouraged them to tryout in other counties throughout the state.

They suggested doing a Queen Clinic in this area. While waiting for the results a lunch was provided to the girls and their families. Crowning of the Royalty was done by the Junior Royalty girls. The saddle blankets and leather engraved halters were made by Marvin Thayn of Cleveland. All contestants went home with a gift just for trying out. The Royalty appeared at the Spanish Trails Rodeo on Friday and Saturday nights. Look for the Spanish Trail Rodeo Royalty in the Ferron Peach Days Parade in September.
