Programs for High School Students

The Interamerican University studies Institute will offer two programs to Costa Rica and Pura Vida this summer. The programs are open to students between the ages of 15-17 who will have completed two years of high school Spanish by June. Scholarships are also available. Applications are due by Feb. 9, 2007. Turkey Trot

Huntington City Annual Turkey Trot will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23 at 9 a.m. at the old town hall parking lot. There will be a 5K run and a kids run. Come join in and bring the whole family. Registration is $1.


Huntington City will have Santa at the Huntington Elementary on Dec. 19. Pre-schoolers can come and see Santa from 11:30-12:30 p.m.

Huntington City Christmas Celebration

A Fireman Fiesta on Dec. 1 at the Huntington Senior Center. Dinner will be served from 5-7 p.m. Bring the whole family for dinner and games.

Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting

The ribbon cutting ceremony to open Tyler Jeffs' Farm Bureau Office, the Community Nursing Services office, and the office of Heugley and Olsen, Attorneys at Law will be held Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. The public is welcome to attend the open house from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The building is located west of Boyd's Pharmacy building in Castle Dale.

Scouting Leader Recognition Banquet

The theme for the adult scouting leaders recognition banquet is Hunting for Treasures. There will be a lot of outdoor gear door prizes. It will be held Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Castle Dale Stake Center. This is for all adults involved in the scouting program. Contact a member of your bishopric to RSVP. Come and enjoy a good meal and fun.

Baseball Camp

The Rocky Mountain School of Baseball announces its first annual Turkey Ball camp on Nov. 24-25 in Mesquite, Nev. The camp is for individuals or teams from ages 7-18, who will be divided into age groups. The collegiate and professional staff will include players, coaches, and scouts. Ballet Repertory Ensemble

The Ballet Repertory Ensemble will be holding the following performances at the Geary Theater at 7:30, Nutcracker on Nov. 16 and 18; The Grinch and other pieces on Nov. 17 and 20, also at the Rio Theater in Helper on Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m.; Salute to Broadway on Feb. 23-24; Spring Contemporary Concert on April 25 and 27; Spring Classical Concert on April 26 and 28.

4-H Holiday

Holiday 4-H will continue for any youth wanting to participate. We will be making snowmen. We will meet Nov 16 at 4 p.m. in room 218 in the Old Courthouse in Castle Dale. Cost is $1.50. If you have questions or to reserve your spot, please call us at 381-2381.

Winter Cheer Camp

Emery Spartans Winter Cheer Camp for ages 4-15 will be held on Nov. 20-21 at Orangeville Elementary from 3:30-5 p.m. They will perform on Nov. 22 at the JV basketball game at the Spartan Center. The cost is $25 per child. You can register with an Emery High Cheerleader or at the door. No black sole shoes and jewelry and wear your hair up.

Nightmare Canyon

Justin Harris was lost and injured in Baptist Draw in Emery County. The Search and Rescue was called out to rescue him. His story will be told on Nov. 23 and Nov. 24. The program entitled "I Shouldn't Be Alive: Nightmare Canyon" will air on the Discovery Channel.

Staying Sharp and Fraud Forums

AARP Utah will present a Staying Sharp Forum at the College of Eastern Utah in Price on Nov. 18 from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Scientists from the University of Utah's Brain Institute will provide practical advice on keeping the brain sharp, on dementia and depression. An afternoon seminar on identity theft and fraud will be presented by Utah's Attorney General's Office and Division of Securities. A free box lunch will be provided for attendees between the two sessions. This is a free event. To register call 1-888-687-2277.

Holiday Shopping Expo

A Holiday Shopping Expo will be held at Huntington Elementary on Nov. 25 from 10 a..m.-4 p.m. Santa Claus will visit. For more information or to reserve a booth call Lyndsey at 749-1142.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country is accepting home applications. Appicants must complete 20 hours of work for the group, have been turned down for a conventinonal home loan and have a stable income. Volunteers and board members are needed. Residents may volunteer for workdays, donate aluminum cans or obtain applications by going to their new office located at 151 South 700 East, the All Srapped Up building or by calling 435-637-9701.

Food Handler's Class

Food handler's classes will be held on Nov. 16 and Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Health Department, 25 West Main in Castle Dale. Christmas Extravaganza

The annual Christmas Extravaganza will be held Dec. 2 at the Emery County Recreational Center in Castle Dale. We are looking for people to provide entertainment that day from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Performances could be any type of musical number, dramatic readings, poetry, stories, dance, drill or any numbers that add to our Holiday event.

Prehistory Week Poster Contest

State History announces the 2007 Utah Prehistory Week Poster Contest. The winning poster will be professionally printed and distributed nationwide to promote Utah's exciting past, there will also be cash awards. TRUTH Campaign

The 2007 TRUTH from Youth Anti-tabacco advertising contest is giving fourth and fifth graders the opportunity to become a big-time producer. American Legion Fundraiser Raffle

The American Legion Post 73 is sponsoring two raffles to raise funds to help needy military families. Tickets can be purchased at Jones Ace Hardware, Desertview Federal Credit Union, Maverik in Huntington and Castle Dale, BK's Stop and Shop, Wards 4X4, Hart's, and Magnusons. Be generous, the families need your support.

Gingerbread House Festival

The Gingerbread House Festival, a new event in Emery County, will be held Dec. 1-2 at the Emery County Recreation Center. Admission is free. Entries are due by Nov. 30 for the competition, and Dec. 1-2 for viewing only. Everyone who wants to participate should build a gingerbread house and bring it to the festival. If house aren't your style, try a sleigh or a gingerbread man or woman. These can be done by a group, family or individual. Each creation must be 80 percent edible. Local Veterans Employment Representative

A local veterans employment representative visits the Castle Dale DWS Office the first Wednesday of each month. Appointments can also be arranged on other days by contacting Steve Wilkinson at (435) 636-2343. The LVER is also available Monday through Friday at Department of Workforce Services, 475 West Price River Drive, for questions about VA benefits, assistance with VA applications, employment assistance and other veterans issues. Free Legal Clinic

Every second and fourth Monday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. a free legal clinic will be held at the Price Court House. Call Utah Legal Services at 1-800-662-1563 to set up an appointment.

Tip Line for Drug Violations

A tip line has been introduced in Emery County. The Emery County drug task force is requesting help from the residents to report any suspicious drug activity. The number is 381-2888, and all callers will remain anonymous. It is very important for citizens to be actively involved in helping remove drugs users and pushers from Emery County.

Drug Awareness Night

A drug awareness night will be held at Castle Dale Elementary on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.

Project ChildSafe

Project ChildSafe, sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation will be distributing free gun locks throughout Emery County. Members of the community may call their local law enforcement agency for information on how to obtain a free gun lock.

Support Group for Parents

The Three Wishes Inc. Program makes available power (electric) wheelchairs to senior citizens (65 years and older) and the permanently disabled at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. Call toll free at 1-800-817-1871.

CASA Volunteers Needed

Each year hundreds of children in Emery and Carbon counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Angels Have Wheels

All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disorders, and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they maybe eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare. Help With Inhalers

Senior Mobility

The Senior Mobility Program makes available to senior citizens and the permanently disabled, power electric wheelchairs at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. Call 1-800-451-0971 to see if you qualify.

Utah Valley Cancer Center

Utah Valley Cancer Center, located at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center has a new toll-free phone number. Anyone can call 1-866-549-3800 to schedule an appointment, get information about local cancer support groups or to find out more about IHC cancer services and physicians. Hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Donations are needed from Emery County residents to the Emery Chapter of the Salvation Army which provides emergency assistance for the people of Emery County as well as people traveling through the area.
