Lady Spartans 4 Games, 3 Wins
|Camille Fehlberg goes in for the shot.|
As was previously stated, this Emery High Lady Spartan basketball team has a brutal schedule this season. Instead of making excuses, this team just goes about their business by showing up, playing the game and getting better and better each day. Emery started their week with a home game on Tuesday night against Cedar City and won convincingly 65-32. Then came three straight road games. First was 4-A ranked Payson, followed by 4-A Lehi and 4-A ranked Mountain Crest.
Against Cedar City, Emery fell behind early as they went over three minutes without a score until Jodie Lundell finally scored. Emery tied the score at 6-6 and then proceeded to outscore Cedar 12-0 over the seven minutes to lead 19-6. After going to halftime up by 10 points, Emery dominated the second half to win the game. Emery won the third quarter 18-6 and the fourth quarter 21-10.
Camille Fehlberg was the leading scorer with 15 points. Meagan Pearson and ShiAnne Allred also finished in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively. Rachel Rasmussen had 9 points followed by Jodi Robertson with 8 points. Frankie Komar and Shalae Cox had 4 points each and Jodie Lundell and freshman Jenni Stinson each scored 2 points.
At Payson, Emery won the battle, and it was a battle, and the game in overtime 61-57. The game was close throughout as neither team could shake the other. Emery led 49-44 with forty-one seconds remaining in the game but would not score again in regulation. Payson scored a 2-point basket, Emery missed the front end of a one and one free throw attempt and then Payson hit a 3-pointer with 7 seconds left to tie the game. Rasmussen's shot at the buzzer refused to fall.
In overtime, Emery got the early lead as Pearson and Fehlberg hit 3-point shots. Emery was then 6 for 13 at the free throw line to get the win.
Fehlberg led the team with 24 points including 7 in overtime. Pearson and Allred each had 11 points. Lundell finished with 5 points, Komar finished with 4 points and Rasmussen and Robertson each had 3 points.
After the game, Coach Steve Gordon talked to his team, "You did an excellent job today. Our defense is right where we want it to be, our rebounding is good. We still need to work on our free throws; we were only 6 for 13 in overtime. If we shoot the ball well like we can we win today's game by 20."
In Logan at the Mountain Crest High tournament, Emery defeated old region rival Lehi 52-43. Lehi is 4-A this year and moving to 5-A next season as they are growing that fast.
Emery got out to a big lead in this game and then Lehi closed the gap in the final period as Emery rested their starters for the next day's game. After starting slow, Emery trailed 11-10 at the end of the first quarter. Emery put the game away in the second period as the won the quarter 22-11.

Frankie Komar also hit two 3-pointers on the way to 8 points. Robertson and Fehlberg each had 5 points and a 3-pointer. Allred finished with 2 points but also had 8 rebounds to lead the team. Emery hit 70 percent of their free throws in this game.
In their final game of the week, Emery lost a close one as Mountain Crest came out on top 56-55. Rasmussen was the leading scorer in this game with 16 points. Fehlberg, despite facing a double team all night, still finished with 14 points. Pearson again finished in double figures with 11 points. Allred had 7 points, Lundell had 5 points and Robertson and Cox each had 1 point.
Gordon added one more thing; "We will be a pretty dang good team when we get all the bugs worked out." They already are a dang good team; they have the opportunity to really be something special.
