Women in the Outdoors

The Flockers of Carbon and Emery Counties welcome all ladies 14 years old and up to the second annual Women in the Outdoors event on July 20-21 at the Little Bear Campground. Workshops will include trap shooting, mountain manning, wilderness survival/first aid, archery, fishing, rubber ducky race, crafts and more. The participation fee is $60 which includes; one year National Wild Turkey Federation membership, "Women in the Outdoors" quarterly magazine subsription; workshops on Saturday, four meals and tent/camper space. Heritage Days Parade

The Heritage Days Parade will be held on July 4th. Childrens parade will be at 9:30 a.m., line up at city park and center street. The main and horse parade will be at 10 a.m., line up at 8:30 a.m. at 200 South Main for the main parade and at 300 South next to motel for the horse parade. Cash awards for the best float entries. Gun Club Schedule

The Emery County gun club will shoot June 23. Bring the family for a night of fun. A variety of games for everyone to enjoy such as: Annie Oakley; blue birds; buddy piece shoot; one man piece; 20 bird buddy shoot; three man buddy; and draw for partner buddy shoots.Women and youth shoot from 5-7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to shoot after 7 p.m. For more information, contact AJ at 435-749-2669 or Eric at 435-384-2319.

Play It Safe Summertime Safety

A play it safe summertime safety workshop and bike rodeo will be held at Huntington Lion's Park on June 27 for children ages 3-12. Sgt. Martin Wilson will conduct the rodeo and teach summertime safety. Bring your bikes and come have fun.

Emery Spardettes Fund Raiser Yard Sale and Car Wash

The Emery Spardettes will hold a fund raiser yard sale and car wash on June 23 in the Orangeville City Park. There will be lots of items to choose from. It will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Castle Country Playdays

The Castle Country playdays series will be held June 30, July 14, Aug. 11 and Sept. 15 in Huntington. Sign-ups will be from 8-8:45 a.m. and start time is 9 a.m. For more information contact Karl and Trisha Jensen at 653-2770 or Anita Sitterud at 653-2782.

Food Handler's Classes

Relay for Life

The 2007 Emery County Relay for Life will be held June 29-30 beginning Friday night at 6 p.m. and ending Saturday morning with breakfast at 9 a.m. The theme this year is A Circus with a Purpose. It's a big year for the Emery County Relay with 22 teams participating and more than 66 business and individual sponsors. The agenda is: opening ceremony-6 p.m.; survivor walk. Miss Relay Contest

Miss Relay Contest: Male contestants are provided by participating teams. The contestants have from 6:30-10 p.m. to parade in their finest dresses and accessories and gather votes in the form of money and donations. Don't miss the talent portion. The winner is crowned at 10:30 p.m. after their efforts and money are tallied.

MECCA Bike Ride

Farm Service Agency Nominations

Nominations for candidates to run for county committee election representing all producers in 1.AA #1 will be accepted from June 15-Aug. 1 FSA-669A, nomination form must be filled out and returned the the FSA office before Aug. 1.

Emery County Fair Theme: New Adventures Await.

Entries are due July 31. Entries are accepted at the exhibit building at the fair grounds. Food, fruits and vegetable entries will be due Aug. 1, no later than 10 a.m. Enter your projects from this past year. If you have questions regarding what is an acceptable fair entry, contact the 4-H office. The guidelines will soon be on the website as well. These activities, dates and times are subject to change. For junior high camps, registrations will be accepted beginning May 29. If you would like to participate in any or all of the activities but are unable to afford these camps, some scholarships are available. Contact Christine Jensen for further information. The Utah State University Extension Office is open each day, Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the phone number is 381-2381.

River Rats Camp

Canyonlands Field Institute is offering a River Rats Camp for teens age 13-18 on Aug. 5-11. The campers will run the river from Loma, Colo. through Westwater during this hands-on workshop. Comments Requested on Lake Fuels Project

The US Forest Service is requesting comments and suggestions related to the Lake fuels project. They must be submitted to the Forest Service by June 20. Miss Emery Pageant

The Miss Emery scholarship pageant will be held on July 14 at 7 p.m. Contestants must be 17 years of age by Sept. 1 to be in the pageant. Most juniors qualify. Anyone wishing to sign-up to compete in this scholarship pageant are encouraged to contact Jarilyn Spears, pageant director at 381-5667 or 381-2239 or call the Emery County Progress at 381-2431. Competition includes talent, interview, swimwear, on-stage question and evening gown.Scholarships for the pageant winner are queen, $1,200, first attendant, $700, second attendant, $500.

Cottonwood Canal Company Summer Hours

Make note of the summer hours for the Cottonwood Canal Company. The hours are: Thursday from 3-6 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m.-noon. For more information call Stan at 381-2073.

Grants for Sustaining Agriculture

Applications are now avalilable for more than $2 million in grants focusing on research and education to sustain agriculture in the West. Applications can be obtained from the Western SARE Web site http://wsare.usu.edu, by calling 435-797-2257, or by emailing wsare@ext.usu.edu.

Soldiers Addresses Needed

American Legion Auxiliary #42 of Ferron is looking for addresses from people of Emery County that have loved ones proudly serving our country in a war zone such as Iraq or Afghanistan. We have a program started three years ago called Operation Home Support which we send packages to soldiers, but we need help from Emery County residents with the names and addresses of your loved ones that are serving. They need a package from Operation Home Support to let them know they aren't forgotten and that we care and support them. Old Mine Maps

The Utah Geological Survey is looking for old abandoned coal mine maps. The maps will only be borrowed for a digital image and then will be return to the owners. For more information go to www.geology.utah.gov.

Movie in Orangeville park

The Orangeville youth council will sponsor a free movie on June 22 at the Orangeville park. The movie will be projected onto the community center building. Bring blankets and chairs. Concessions will be sold. The movie is for all ages and will begin as soon as it gets dark.

Habitat for Humanity

Medical Help for Children

Utah families with children in need of medical services or medical equipment needs not fully covered by health insurance can apply to the United HealthCare Children's Foundation for up to $5,000 in medical assistance grants online at www.uhccf.org

Bible Study

Local Veterans Employment Representative

A local veterans employment representative visits the Castle Dale DWS Office the first Wednesday of each month. Appointments can also be arranged on other days by contacting Steve Wilkinson at (435) 636-2343. The LVER is also available Monday through Friday at Department of Workforce Services, 475 West Price River Drive, for questions about VA benefits, assistance with VA applications, employment assistance and other veterans issues. The Three Wishes Inc. Program makes available power (electric) wheelchairs to senior citizens (65 years and older) and the permanently disabled at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. Call toll free at 1-800-817-1871.

CASA Volunteers Needed

Each year hundreds of children in Emery and Carbon counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Those interested in volunteering should contact Kerrie, the CASA coordinator at 435-381-5595.

Angels Have Wheels

All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disorders, and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they maybe eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare. Help With Inhalers

The in home Rx programs makes available breathing medications and nebulizers to patients who may have asthma, emphysema or COPD at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. Call 1-800-344-5764 or visit the website www.inhomerx.com for more information on the details of this program.

Senior Mobility

The Senior Mobility Program makes available to senior citizens and the permanently disabled, power electric wheelchairs at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. Call 1-800-451-0971 to see if you qualify.

Utah Valley Cancer Center

Utah Valley Cancer Center, located at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center has a new toll-free phone number. Anyone can call 1-866-549-3800 to schedule an appointment, get information about local cancer support groups or to find out more about IHC cancer services and physicians. Hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Free Wheelchairs to the Disabled

The Wheelchair Foundation, Intermountain Healthcare, and the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation are partnering to distribute free wheelchairs to disabled Utahns. Persons interested in getting a free wheelchair can call 1-877-387-3839, or apply at www.wheelchairfoundation.org/utah

Salvation Army

Donations are needed from Emery County residents to the Emery Chapter of the Salvation Army which provides emergency assistance for the people of Emery County as well as people traveling through the area. Mail donations to the Emery County Sheriff's Office, Box 281, Green River, Utah 84525 or Emery County Sheriff's Office, Box 817, Castle Dale, Utah 84513.
