Spartans down Uintah and look ahead to Carbon
|Emery offense makes some good yardage.|
Although the final score does not show the true beating that Emery handed the Uintah Utes in their homecoming football game, Emery won their fourth straight game by a score of 29-7. Emery rolled to more than 500 yards of offense while holding the Utes to less than 200 yards.
Emery had other opportunities to score in this game that would have allowed the team to claim another "whupping." Emery's offense stalled twice inside the 10-yard line as they turned the ball over on downs and then there was one fumble to stop another drive.
Emery scored first in the game. After an interception, Emery got the ball on the Uintah 45-yard line and Ryne Jones scored on a Dempsey Jeffs pass. Gatlan Huntington kicked the extra point. Uintah tied the game on their next drive as they went 91 yards and scored on a 34-yard pass play. As the half came to a close, Uintah was tackled in the end zone for a safety to give Emery the lead 9-7.
The second half belonged to the Spartans. On the first Ute series, Emery caused a fumble and recovered the ball at the Uintah 37 yard line. After a 26-yard pass to Cody Allen, Ryne Jones caught the touchdown throw and scored the touchdown from 13 yards away. Huntington kicked again.
After Uintah was stopped on fourth and four at the Emery 47 yard line, Emery promptly scored on a 53-yard run by fullback Mike Jones. Again the Huntington kick was good. On Emery's next series, Jones again broke a 53-yard run to get Emery into scoring position but the Spartans were unable to punch it in.
After another Spartan interception, this time by Cody Allen at the Emery four-yard line, Emery would score again as Ryne Jones broke up the middle for an 81-yard run and the score. This gave the final score of 29-7.
Emery had 336 yards on the ground and 167 yards passing. Ryne Jones led the way with 13 carries and 187 yards. Mike Jones rushed 11 times for 130 yards. Jeffs was seven for 15 passing for 167 yards. Emery had 336 yards on the ground to finish with 503 total yardage.
Emery's defense held the Utes to 78 first half yards and 117 second half yards for a total of 195 yards.
Emery's defense caused two fumbles, came up with two interceptions and got a safety as they continued playing smart and aggressively.
Emery now will open the region season as they travel to Carbon this Friday night. The Emery JV team and sophomore team will host the Carbon teams on Thursday night.
