The Utah Permanent Community Impact Board Thursday awarded the Town of Cleveland a $200,000 grant to build sidewalks and install new street signs. "The improvements will ensure safe travel for school children, avoid confusion and reduce misdirected emergency service calls," said Emery County Commissioner Drew Sitterud. Sitterud said, the town will contribute $50,000, but can't finance the entire project due to its limited tax base.
The Community Impact Board awards grants and low-interest loans to cities, towns and counties impacted by mining and the extraction of oil and gas on federal land. Most of the money benefits rural Utah and is spent creating safer, more liveable communities. The program is managed by the Division of Housing and Community Development under the Utah Department of Community and Culture.
