A Savage coal truck and a dump truck collide on SR-10 on April 2.

On April 2 an accident occurred involving a tractor trailer coal haul truck owned by Savage and driven by Arsenio (Rick) Velasquez. Velasquez was headed south on SR-10 near the junction of SR-122 (Hiawatha junction). A dump truck owned by EPH Henrie Construction and driven by Darwin Lee Hunt, was on SR-122 at the stop sign at the junction with SR-10. The dump truck pulled out in front of the coal truck and was struck on its left side by the coal truck. The vehicles came to rest in the north bound lane of SR-10 and began to burn.

The driver of the tractor trailer was extricated and taken to Castleview Hospital with severe burns and was Life Flighted to U of U Hospital. Driver of the dump truck was also transported to Castle View Hospital with minor injuries.

The Savage truck bursts into flames after hitting the dump truck which pulled out in front of the truck from the Hiawatha Junction road.

Several emergency vehicles and hazardous material crews were on site for the clean-up. The dump truck spilled its load of gravel all over the road. Both vehicles leaked fuel onto the highway which was closed for several hours.

Traffic was diverted at the Ridge Road turnoff in Carbon County and at the Cleveland turnoff just north of Huntington in Emery County. All traffic detoured through Cleveland, Elmo and Miller Creek to avoid the accident scene. Velasquez received burns on over 90 percent of his body and succumbed to his injuries in Salt Lake at the U of U hospital. The accident was called in at 10:03 a.m.

The dump truck turns over on its side and spills its load on SR-10.
