Emery High's baseball team, finishing second in region 8, went to the home fields of Judge Memorial Catholic High School last Saturday and split their two games of the opening weekend of 3-A State baseball playoffs. Emery lost the opener to Park City 10-5 and then defeated Morgan 15-10 to stay alive in the tournament. Emery will now travel to Taylorsville High School and play Wasatch at 1:30 p.m. this Thursday. Against Park City, Emery fell behind 2-0 as the Miners scored a run in each of the second and third innings. Gatlan Huntington led off with a double, Ryne Jones singled, Blake Mortensen tripled and Derrick Allred singled for the Spartans. Park City came right back in the top of the fourth inning and scored six runs and the lead. After the first batter grounded out to the shortstop and the second batter got thrown out at second base trying to steal, the Miners had seven straight batters get on base. Three singles, two walks, a double and two Emery errors led to the runs. Emery added a single run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth inning. Jordan Gee scored in the fourth after singling to get on and Mortensen singling to score him. In the fifth inning, Colby Snow doubled and scored on a single by Addison Collard. Park City added two runs in the fifth inning. Against Morgan, things did not look great at the beginning of the game as the Trojans scored five runs in the top of the first inning. Emery retaliated immediately as they scored six in the bottom of the first and then six more in the bottom of the second. Emery added a single run in each of the third, fourth and sixth innings while Morgan added two in the second, two in the third and one in the seventh inning as the Trojans got eliminated from play. In the bottom of the first inning, Huntington led off with a single, Gee walked, Jones walked, Mortensen got hit by a pitch, Snow got hit by a pitch, Taylor Tanner got on by an error, Collard walked, Allred hit a sacrifice fly and Steven Giles singled for the six runs. In the bottom of the second inning, Jones singled, Mortensen singled, Snow singled, Tanner walked, Collard singled, Giles doubled, Huntington singled and Gee singled with Huntington getting thrown out trying to advance to third base on Gee's single. Jones scored in the third inning after he singled and Mortensen doubled. Gee scored in the fourth inning after a pitch hit him and Jones tripled.
