The Emery High baseball team has done very well this season if the opponent is not Uintah High. Emery played three games last week, won two of those but they did receive their second loss of the season to now have a record of 8-2. This was the second time that Uintah defeated Emery, this time by an 8-6 score. Emery defeated Union 8-7 and Manti 7-6.
With the season half over, Emery is now set to start region play. Emery will travel to Juan Diego Tuesday and will host Delta on Friday. The Eagles were the preseason favorite to win the 3-A championship.With all teams in region eight enjoying a somewhat successful early start, it appears that every region game will be exciting, tough and necessary to win to obtain not only a favorable seeding at state but a seeding at all.
On Tuesday at Union, the Cougars scored the first three runs of the game in the first two innings off Emery starting pitcher Gatlan Huntington. Union added another in the fourth inning and three more runs in the sixth inning.
Emery scored their first run in the third inning as Brett Mecham walked and scored on a triple by Huntington. Emery scored again in the fourth inning. Colby Snow singled and scored on a combination of stolen bases and wild pitches as the next three batters all struck out. Emery added another run in the fifth inning as Addison Collard doubled leading off the inning and scored on a ball hit by Huntington that was booted by the Cougar second baseman. Emery trailed 4-3 after five innings.
Emery scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to get their first lead of the game. Snow walked, Taylor Tanner tripled to score Snow, Collard walked and stole second base and both scored on a single by Mecham. Union came right back with three runs to take the lead right back.
In the top of the seventh, Huntington singled to lead off the inning, Jason Giles walked and both scored after back-to-back singles by Snow and Derrick Allred. Despite four walks in the bottom of the inning, Union did not score and Emery won by one.
Against Uintah, Emery did a better job of keeping the game close but could not get the win. The Utes scored first in the second inning on a lead-off homerun and four more times in the third inning on five straight base hits. Emery scored three times in the bottom of the third to keep the game close. Kashe Jewkes walked, Huntington doubled, Snow doubled and then scored on a wild pitch. Uintah scored once in each of the last three innings.
Emery scored a single run in the fifth inning as Giles walked and scored on a Uintah error. Emery added two more runs in the sixth inning as both Collard and Mecham walked leading off the inning and both scored on a Giles single. Emery got two runners on in the bottom of the seventh inning but a double play ended the game.
Against Manti, Emery took the early lead and then held on for the win. Emery scored four runs in the first inning and one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Manti scored twice in the fourth inning, once in the fifth and three more times in the sixth inning. Manti stranded 10 base runners.
In the first inning, Huntington got on base due to a Manti catcher's error, Giles got hit by a pitch, Snow was safe due to a Manti first baseman error and Allred hit a double to left field. Allred scored on a single by Nevin Jensen. In the fourth inning, Mecham was safe due to an error and scored due to more wild pitches. In the fifth inning, Allred walked and scored after back-to-back singles by Tanner and Jensen. In the sixth inning, Jewkes singled, stole second and scored on a single by Huntington.
