Last week, the Emery High Lady Spartans struggled at the plate and picked up two losses on the softball field. Against Salem Hills at Salem Hills, two base hits by Markette Tanner, and JoLynn Jennings got hit by a pitch were the only base runners in the game for Emery as they lost a region game 8-0.

On Wednesday, on a cold, gusty day in Roosevelt, 16 Spartan batters struck out, one walked and only four batters picked up a base hit in the non-region game. Gabby Guymon had two of those hits with Jennings and Tanner having the others as Emery lost 7-0.

Against Union, the Cougars scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning after two were out and two were on. An unfielded ground ball that could have led to the third out opened the door for Union to score and then they added five runs in the inning to lead 5-0. Union then added two runs in the fifth inning.

In the seventh inning, Emery threatened as Michelle Oliver walked and got to third base on a base hit by Guymon. Guymon then stole second to put to Emery runners in scoring position. Unfortunately, the next two batters struck out and the game was over.

At Salem Hills, the first Skyhawk run scored after an Emery error in the first inning. They added another run in the second inning. Salem scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding lead that the Emery bats were never able to overcome.

In the region contest, nine Emery batters struck out with eight batters grounding out and three batters flying out to the center fielder.

In both games, several Emery batters have hit the ball hard but right at people.

Emery hosts Delta on Tuesday and then travels to North Sanpete on Thursday as they look to pick up their first region victory. Emery currently has a season record of 8-6.
