With the annual black and gold game now history, the Emery Spartans are now ready to play football for real and that will start this week with a home game. The 2009 high school football season gets under way with the Spartans hosting Grand High School in an endowment game that benefits the UHSAA.

High school football anymore is a long, grueling process for the players and the team. After last season, this season's seniors and juniors went into weight lifting for the winter. In the spring, there was spring football for those players that did not play other sports. And then summer came and it was weights again culminated by a weeklong camp at Millard High and a passing camp at Uintah High.

Then it was football season. The team started conditioning on July 26 and have been going strong ever since. Now the season is ready to start the season.

The scrimmage game featured the Emery team divided in half with the varsity team playing two quarters and the younger players playing two quarters. The purpose is to get one last look at players before the season begins and for players to play in a game mode before it is all for real. It is also good for the parents and fans to get a sneak preview of the season's team. As for the game itself, it was mostly a battle in the middle of the field between two teams with the intent of their side winning. It, for the most part, was a good football game with intensity on both sides. Although the black jerseyed side moved the ball well, they failed to get into the end zone while the white-jerseyed side did managed to score twice, once by the older guys and once by the younger guys. Final score was 12-0. Game time Friday night is 7 p.m. at Emery High School.
