Last week was a week that can best be described as a week that the Lady Spartans of Emery High School simply rolled over their opponents and came away with big region wins. On Tuesday night, Emery ran over Manti 69-35 and on Thursday night did pretty much the same thing as they outgunned North Sanpete 76-40. Those are two games that Emery won by an average of 35 points per game difference.

Emery started strong in both games and never let up the pressure as neither team had the manpower to play with the Spartans. Not only can this Spartan team score, they also can play some pretty mean defense. In each game Emery shut down their opponent for one quarter. Manti was able to only muster four points in the third quarter against Emery and North Sanpete only scored two points in their third quarter.

Last week, starting point guard Tayler Jewkes was out with an illness but the rest of the team stepped up their game and kept Emery running smoothly. Jessica Murray played the point position for the week and did an admirable job handling the ball. Markette Tanner stepped back into the starting line-up and played very well on the court. She shot the ball well besides being a good defender. Blayr Jeffs received more playing time as a backup point guard and had two good games.

Emery's offense always runs through Abbie Kay and Taylor Mann and both did well last week in the two wins. Taylor scored 39 points in the two games and Abbie added 31 points. These two do a good job of controlling the backboards and keeping the other team at bay defensively.

Against Manti, both Abbie and Taylor scored eight points in the first quarter as Emery opened up an 11 point lead. Markette hit two 3-pointers in the second quarter to lead the team but Abbie was right behind with another five points and Taylor scored four points. Emery increased their lead to 23 points as they now lead 42-19.

In that big third quarter, Taylor scored another six points and Blayr Jeffs hit two 3-pointers. Emery led by 36 points after the third quarter at 59-23. Emery only scored two points up to the 3:15 mark and then scored 15 points in less than three minutes of play.

For the game, Taylor finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and two steals. Abbie finished with 16 points, six steals, five rebounds and three blocked shots. Blayr Jeffs scored 14 points for Emery and had two steals and five rebounds. Jessica Murray scored five points, had nine assists, seven steals and five rebounds in her new position. Jenni Stinson scored four points, Brooke Jensen scored two points and Markette scored six points.

Against North Sanpete, the game was close through the first quarter. Emery led 15-13 at the end of the period. Mann had nine points in the quarter. Emery built a respectable lead by the half as they now led by 16 points at 41-25. Markette led the way with nine points in the quarter. Abbie also scored six points.

The third period belonged all to the Spartans as Taylor and Abbie each scored six points each while nothing went in the basket. Emery won the period 21-2.

Mann led the way with 21 points, had five blocked shots, 12 rebounds, three steals and three assists. Abbie finished with 15 points while pulling down eight rebounds, had five steals and an assist. Markette also finished with 15 points, threesteals and two rebounds.

Also scoring for Emery were Jessica scored nine points, dished out six assists, had three steals and had nine rebounds. Blayr Jeffs scored seven points, Jenni had one point, Jeridi scored two points and Brooke Jensen scored sixpoints for the game.

Jessica finished with nine points, had six assists, three steals and nine rebounds.

Emery travels to Juab Tuesday night and then returns to the Spartan Center next Thursday night against Richfield.
