The American Cancer Society Relay For Life® is seeking volunteers in Emery County including walkers, cancer survivors, caregivers, community leaders, anyone wanting to make a difference. Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit fundraising teams, garner community support, coordinate logistics, seek refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment and lend a hand to ensure the success of the 2011 and 2012 events.
The next volunteer committee meeting will be held on June 15 in the conference room upstairs in the old court house in Castle Dale at 6:30 p.m. Relay for Life supports the American Cancer Society's mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back against the disease.
Relay for Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at the Emery High School track, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during Relay. Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups . . . people from all walks of life - all aimed at celebrating the lives of those who have had cancer, remembering those lost, and fighting back against the disease.
"Relay for Life is all about our community uniting with the American Cancer Society and supporting its efforts to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays," said Diane Tadehara, Survivorship Chairperson. "Volunteers and participants who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting event are making a commitment to let all of Emery County know that cancer can be defeated."
If you would like to join the Relay for Life as a volunteer or team participant, call the Event Chairperson, Amanda Bjarnson at 435-749-1516, or visit www.RelayForLife.org/castledaleut.
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; by helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation's largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
Event organizers said, "This year's relay will be held on July 15 at the Emery High track. Come one; come all to this public event sponsored by American Cancer Society.
"July is a proud and patriotic month in this magnificent county in this grand state. This year Relay for Life is adding to the exuberance by filling the gap in the month with a spirited event.
"Opening ceremony will include survivor/photographer, Chad Hurst. Chad co-founded the annual canSURVIVE gallery fundraiser to help support cancer education here in Utah. We will be announcing this year's HEART OF RELAY recipient. We have local performers to sing and dance, and the opportunity to practice for American Idol with midnight karaoke. There will be crafts and baked goods available along with individual team fundraising. Dinner will be a stuffed potato bar with more than half a dozen toppings. There will be something for everyone.
"Come walk, come run, come rock and roll with Al Shakespaere. Come laugh with strangers, come cry with friends. Listen to the pipes of White Peaks Centennial Pipe Band sing out Amazing Grace and more. Any way you look at it - it'll be a glorious event, one you won't want to miss."
