Approximately 200 members of the Utah Rock Art Research Association will visit Price in September as the group hosts its annual symposium.
No, the group doesn't follow some unknown "rock and roll" band around the country, but participate in a wide range of interests centered on pictographs and petroglyphs. Even though this association concentrates on Utah rock art, members come from all over the United States. The association attracts a loyal following because of Utah's great examples of rock art, explained local member Layne Miller.
Price was selected for this year's symposium because of the numerous examples of rock art representing a wide range of cultures and periods of time. "Price is the perfect place to stay when visiting the great rock art of Nine Mile Canyon in Carbon County, the San Rafael Swell and Range Creek in Emery County," said Miller
The weekend of Sept. 23-26 is the date and the Carbon County Event Center is the place. This symposium typically consists of two days of presentations on various aspects of rock art, a banquet, an auction fundraiser and at least two days of field trips to rock art sites in the area.
Local residents are welcome to attend keynote presentations Saturday and Sunday morning at 8 a.m. and Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. A registration fee is charged for full conference attendance. Anyone with an interest in rock art will find the presentations interesting. USU staff and students are welcome to attend any presentation for free.
The 20 speakers will include local residents Layne Miller, Pam Miller, and Charmaine Thompson. Featured topics will be the Barrier Canyon Style of rock art found in this area and the rock art of Nine Mile Canyon.
