The Emery High Lady Spartans sported a new look last week when they hosted the Beaver Beavers in a preseason basketball game at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale. Beaver, currently with an 8-2 record, came in as the heavy favorite and escaped town with a 45-40 victory over the host Emery.

Emery started junior Shelby Allred and sophomore Kelsie Cox for the first time this season although both had played many minutes in varsity games. Emery, as a team, shot 37 percent from the field in this game. This is a vast improvement over the past few games where Emery's shooting percentage had been down in the teens.

Beaver came into the game having defeated Hurricane, Canyon View, Delta and North Sanpete, all 3-A teams. Beaver had narrowly lost to Pine View and Cedar, also 3-A teams, for their only losses.

Emery is now 1-5 for the season with only a season opening win over Enterprise in the Hall of Fame game.

Blayr Jeffs, a guard, and Kim Oldroyd, a post player, led the Spartans in the game with 14 points each. Emery got scoring contributions from six different Spartans in the game. Also scoring for Emery were Kelsie Cox with six points and Shelby Allred, Laurel Roundy and Jeridi Price with two points each.

Beaver outscored Emery in the first quarter 15-8. Emery returned the favor in the second quarter as the Spartans clamped down a little bit more on defense and held the Beavers to six points in the period. Emery trailed at the half 21-16. Beaver outscored Emery by four points in the third quarter with Emery outscoring Beaver by four points in the final period. Emery scored 16 points in the final period.

Oldroyd also led the team with nine rebounds while Jeffs pulled down six rebounds. Jeffs also had three steals in the game.

Emery's next game is on Jan. 3, 2012 at home against Stansbury.
