Emery High Track participates in two meets

The 2012 high school track season has officially started and the Emery High boy's and girl's teams have participated in two qualifying track meets so far. Emery opened the season in Moab in the Red Rock Invitational and the teams finished tied for second with Grand High. Wasatch High won the meet.

Emery then participated in the Pine View Invitational in Washington. Almost 50 high schools came to this two-day event. The Emery girls placed 11th out of 26 schools that actually scored in the track meet. Ashlynn Allred, a freshman finished second in the 100 meter race and second in the long jump for the best showing by an Emery athlete. Blayr Jeffs placed sixth in the long jump and Brendon Jorgensen placed eighth in the long jump. These were the Emery athletes that placed in the meet.

Allred lost the 100-meter race to Aimee Wheeler of Springville High. Wheeler ran a 12.80 and Allred ran a 12.86. Wheeler finished second last season in the 4-A state meet. Allred finished ahead of the 3-A second place finisher from last season. In the long jump, Springville's Wheeler, the defending 4-A champion, finished first with a jump of 17'11" while Allred jumped 16'3.25". Jeffs jumped 15'4.5". Both Allred and Jeffs got off longer jumps but scratched in the process to negate their efforts. Brendon Jorgensen, the only boy to place, jumped 19'9" to score for Emery. Jorgensen, although he didn't place, ran fast enough in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles to qualify for state in those events.

Two Spartan relay teams also qualified for state with their times. The girl's 4x400 relay team of Catherine Dyer, Blayr Jeffs, Jessica Guymon and Hannah Dyer finished in 4:30.97 to qualify. The boy's 4x400 team of McKlane Allred, David Dyer, Scott Jackson and Tyler Pulli ran a 3:41.99 to also qualify.

At Moab, Allred finished first in the 100-meters and the 200-meters. The 4x100 relay team of Allred, Catherine Dyer, Jeffs and Hailee Rogers also finished first Jessica Guymon finished third in the high jump with a jump of 4'9" and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles. Blayr Jeffs finished second in the long jump with a jump of 16' and Hailee Rogers finished third with a jump of 15'4.5". Hannah Dyer placed seventh in the shot put. The 4x400 relay team of Catherine Dyer, Hanna Dyer, Jessica Guymon and Hailee Rogers finished second. For the boy's team, Scott Jackson finished second in the 400-meter race and seventh in the 100-meters. Brendon Jorgensen finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, fourth in the long jump and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles. Nagel Viera was eighth in the 300 hurdles. Emery placed four people in the high jump. Gavin Oviatt placed second, Taylor Hansen placed third, Justin Potter was fourth and Dillon Wilstead was fifth. Kalin Reynolds was seventh in the javelin. The 4x100 relay team of Dyer, Jackson, Jorgensen and Viera finished third.

Emery has an easy schedule until April 14 when they go to Carbon for the Carbon Farm Bureau meet that is a qualifying meet.
