Sports: GR baseball

Last week, Green River baseball hosted Pinnacle in a crucial region doubleheader. The two teams split the games 8-5 and 12-11 with Pinnacle winning the opener and the Pirates the closer. Green River now finds themselves in a must win situation this Friday when they travel to Wendover to close out the season. Green river's playoff aspirations are simple, win.

If Green River defeats Wendover twice, then the Pirates will enter the 1-A playoffs as the third place team from the region. If they lose twice, the season will be over. If they split, Green River and Pinnacle will then have to play a tie breaker game probably this Saturday to see which team will go on to the tournament.

The 1-A quarterfinals will be held next Tuesday in Spanish Fork. The semifinals and finals will be held at Dixie State College in St George.

Tabiona won the region this season as they finished undefeated in region action. Tintic High finished in second place with losses only to Tabiona. Then come Green River and Pinnacle.

Zack Shaffer, according to Coach Rob Maughan, has been Green river's best player this season. Shaffer is a senior that actually transferred from Pinnacle to play his final season. Shaffer is the team's third baseman and best hitter.

Spencer Marshall has been outstanding behind the plate and a good hitter and TJ Hughes and Chance Pfander have been the top pitchers for the team.
