Spartans Back to Basics after Losing Two

With the region opener against Lehi coming up, the Emery High Spartan football team is going to use this bye week to work on and improve fundamentals of the sport. After losing to Canyon View at home 40-19, the Spartans traveled to Ogden and suffered their third loss of the season 27-13 to the Tigers.

Talking to a disappointed Coach Reynolds after the Ogden game, an obviously frustrating night to him, he said, "We are a good football team. We are much better than we showed in that second half of tonight's game. We tackled poorly, we blocked poorly, we need to work on the basics."

The Spartans started strong against the Tigers. After returning the opening kick-off to the 35 yard line, the Spartans marched down the field in only five plays to score on a 6-yard run by Spencer Cook. The big play of the series was a 48-yard Bowie Jeffs pass to Matt Stucki.

Ogden also scored on their opening series as their 15-play drive nearly consumed the entire quarter. A 3-yard pass and good extra point put the Tigers ahead 7-6.

Emery responded with a score on their very next series as Jeffs threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Bawden. Jeffs also had passes in the series to Stucki for 19-yards and Zeke Atwood for 20 yards. Ogden took back the lead just before halftime as they intercepted an Emery pass and scored two plays later.

Coach Reynolds was encouraged by the first half play of the team as boding well for the second half "After playing well the last two weeks after halftime, I really thought we had it. But tonight, we seemed to hit a wall. We looked like we were out of gas in that second half." After having 135 yards of offense in the first half, they added only 35 yards the second half.

Ogden, despite being smaller than Emery, outplayed the Spartans in that second half as they scored on two field goals and added a 98-yard punt return for a score.

A week earlier against the Canyon View Falcons, the Spartans again scored on their opening drive of the game to take the early lead. Jeffs scored on a 1-yard run. From that point on the game belonged to the Falcons. They scored on a 63-yard run, a 73-yard punt return, a 1-yard run and a 39-yard run to open up a 28-7 lead. Emery held Canyon View to only one second half score and scored twice themselves as Jeffs and Cook each got into the end zone.

With no game this week, the Spartans will use the extra time "to work on the game's fundamentals" according to Coach Reynolds. Emery will be back in action Sept 19 at Lehi.
