Spencer Cook made it a repeat as he again turned in his best game of the season against his old high school and the Emery High Spartans won their homecoming game and defeated their rival last Friday night 36-27.
Cook had 148 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns on 19 carries in the game against Carbon. Cook also led a determined Spartan defensive effort as Emery allowed only 63 yards of offense by Carbon in the second half until the last drive of the ballgame. Cook scored on runs of 1,9,5 and 9 yards.
After the game, coach Kevin Reynolds had this to say about Cook, "Spencer moved here from Carbon County three years ago and he has always played well against them. His best game last year was in that victory. He is a determined young man. He has speed, size and also some moves. Cook is as good as we have had in a while."
Also scoring in the game for the Spartans was Mike Blomquist as he caught a Joey Bernard 23-yard pass for the first score of the second half. That offensive series was set up by an interception of a Dino pass by Spartan cornerback Josh Eden. Eden also had another interception in the first half and Landon Thomas and Caleb Sitterud also added interceptions in the game.
Emery gave up 212 yards of offense in the first half but only 115 in the second as Emery allowed Carbon 16 yards in their first four possessions of the second half.
Carbon's Chris Hatch scored their first TD on a 5-yard run after Emery fumbled the opening kick-off. Daniel Davis scored Carbon's second TD on a 60-yard Brandon Wilson pass. Hatch scored again in the second quarter on a 1-yard run. Dustin Howe scored the last Carbon TD on an 18-yard Wilson pass with time running out in the game.
Asked about the defensive differences between the halves, Coach Reynolds had this to say, "We really struggled for a half tonight, maybe it was because it was homecoming, maybe because it was Carbon. Our players were trying too hard, we just told them to settle down, do your job and we'll be alright. They did and we were."
With the win, the Spartans guarantee themselves at least fourth in region for the season and a play-off berth. Now the Spartans need to work on adding to the victories for this season. Emery is on the road this Friday night against Park City.
