That's right, the headline is not wrong, the Emery High Spartans won the Carbon Duels wrestling tournament. With their largest team in years in number of participants, the Emery Spartans traveled to Price and made the trip well worth it with the team victory in the two day affair.
With eight teams participating, the Spartans went 6-1 to claim the team title. They defeated Woods Cross 54-18, Duchesne 63-18, Carbon 1 47-30, Carbon 2 51-27, North Sanpete 47-34 and Monticello 46-32. They lost a heartbreaker to Union 45-36.
Wrestling for the Spartans and placing in the tournament were Waldo Espino with a 6-1 record and 1st place at 103 lbs., Steven Giles with a 7-0 record and first place at 112 lbs., Spencer Cook with a 6-1 record and first place at 189 lbs., Kendall Bird with a 6-1 record and second place at 125 lbs., Mike Stream with a 5-2 record and second place at 140 lbs., Jesse Jensen with a 6-1 record and second place at 130 lbs., Tyler Swensen with a 5-2 record and third place at 135 lbs. and Guy Judd at 2-0 and third place at 160 lbs.
Also wrestling for the Spartans were Ryan Stream at 119, Justin Miller at 145, Luke Stoddard at 152, Chase Allred at 171, Jason Christensen at 215, Steven Swasey at heavyweight, Devin Osness at 160 and Joaquin Ortega at 145.
There also was JV tournament at the same time and the Emery JV's did well also. Macade Jensen at 130, Jex Jensen at 135, Cole Bunderson at 140 and Guy Judd at 152 all took first place in their weight class. Jack Ortega at 145 took second place and McKay Allred at 103 and Jaden Bagley at 112 took third place.
While not catching every single match, there were a couple of wrestlers that stood out. After Devin Osness was injured during a match, Guy Judd stepped up and wrestled both varsity and JV. As best as I could tell, Guy won all his matches in both divisions with pins in the 1st periods.
Mike Stream also was interesting to watch with his scissors move as he pinned two opponents.
Talking with Head Coach Ferd Allred during the matches, he had this to say, "Our kids are doing really well, it is amazing what filling all the weights will do for a team. These guys are all young and we have a good junior high program to add to our team next year. This is a good start."
Steven Giles at 112 also pinned all of his opponents in going 7-0. Espino had six pins and was decisioned in his one loss.
Emery is hosting Altamont on Wednesday in the Spartan Center.
