In defeating 4-A's Springville High and 2-A's North Sevier High, the Lady Spartans of Emery High School took their season record to 3-0 as they continued as 3-A's number one team. Last Tuesday, Emery traveled to Utah County and defeated Springville 62-48. On Thursday Emery traveled to Salina and defeated North Sevier 59-53.
Against the physical Red Devils, Emery found themselves down at the end of the first quarter 14-13 as a left handed Springville forward had ten points. Camille Fehlberg led the Emery effort with six points in the period.
The second period turned out to be Emery's quarter as they outscored their opponent 21-11. With the score tied at 23-23, Emery finished the quarter on an 11-2 run to lead at the half 34-25. Camille added 8 more points, including two 3-pointers to again lead the way. Ashley Hansen and Jodi Lundell each had a pair of baskets to aid in the Emery effort.
In the third quarter, Emery held Springville scoreless for the first 4:26 as Emery attained their biggest lead of the game at 17 points. They won the quarter 14-8 to now lead 48-33. Ashley had a good defensive quarter as she had a block, a steal and several rebounds to lead the Emery effort. Meagan Pearson was the leading scorer with 4 points in the period.
Blocked shots by Shayla Pitchforth and Tahna Merrill highlighted the final period as Emery rolled to the win. Camille added 6 more points to finish the night with 20. Calley Seeley had 5 points in the period to finish with eight.
After the game Head Coach Steve Gordon talked about his team's effort, "I think the girls stepped it up tonight, this was a physical ball game. We have a pretty good help defense as our girls do their jobs. When we run our stuff we get a lot of good shots."
Emery won the game with defense and good ball movement on the offensive side to get open shots.
Also scoring for Emery was Jodi with 7 points, Meagan with 6 points, Ashley and Rachel Rasmussen with 5 points each, Alexis Swasey and Shayla Pitchforth with 4 points each and Tahna with 3 points.
Emery's JV team won 55-36 as Meagan had a good game in scoring 25 points. Jodi had 10 points, Rachel had 8 points, Shalae Cox and Jodi Robertson had 4 apiece and Haylie Hansen and Caitlin Hansen each had 2 points.
Emery's sophomore team won 41-36. Caitlin led the way with 10 points. Madison Jensen and ShiAnne Allred each had 9 points. Robertson had 6, Frankie Komar had 3 points and Rebekah Bott and Billie Jean Reed each had 2 points.
At Salina, Emery won a tough game against a hectic full court pressure defense. Emery led 33-23 at the half, took the lead to fifteen and then watched as North Sevier applied lots of pressure and the Spartans crumbled a little under that pressure. Needless to say Emery worked on full court pressure offense in practice on Friday.
Camille was 10-13 at the line as she again led the Spartan effort with 20 points. All nine Emery players again scored in the game. Also scoring were Lundell with 11 points, Tahna with 8 points, Ashley with 7 points, Callie with 6 points, Meagan, Alexis and Rachel with 2 apiece and Shala with 1 point. Callie and Jodi each made two 3-pointers. This again was one of those games where the aggressor teams also shot the most free throws as North Sevier shot 43 compared to Emery's 31.
Emery is on the road this week in Logan for games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They will face bigger schools in each game as they play Highland High from Pocatello, Idaho and Mountain Crest and Lehi.
